Food Poisoning and Pregnancy

Food poisoning starts with a consumption of infected foods. It is very dangerous for pregnant woman. It can be harmful for the baby and can lead to miscarriage. Every pregnant woman should take good care in consuming food.She should pick up carefully her meals. In some cases, food poisoning won’t cause any serious problems, but the fact that you are sick may affect your body and system.

What are the symptoms of food poisoning?

Bacteria such as Listeriosis, Campylobacter, Salmonella, E. Coli, Toxoplasmosis, Shigella and Clostridium botulinum are the most common triggers for food poisoning.

The symptoms differ according to the bacteria ingested. They can go from a simple tummy ache to a serious condition needing hospitalization:
-          Vomiting and diarrhea
-          Nausea
-          Abdominal pain
-          Muscle aches
-          Headaches
-          Fever
-          Loss of stability
-          Blurred vision
-          Flu like symptoms
-          Convulsion

How to prevent food poisoning?

Here are some key steps to consider while preparing and eating foods:

-          Always wash your hands before starting any meal preparation. Clean well the surfaces. Store your food in refrigerator. Do not mix in the same bag meat, chicken and vegetables.

-          Always check the expiry label on each product you acquire.
-          Do not consume unpasteurized milk or any derived product.
-          Do not eat raw vegetables outside the house. Make sure that they are well cleaned and prepared. Clean them with soap and wash under runny water.
-          Do not consume cottage, soft and cream cheese.
-          Wear gloves while gardening. Any vegetable contaminated by cat feces can be harmful to you and cause toxoplasmosis infection.
-          Do not drink untreated, unclean water.
-          Cook very well your meat and chicken meals. Do not consume raw meat.
-          Do not consume smoked seafood.
-          Do not eat refrigerated pâté or meat spreads.
-          When in doubt, do not consume the food. Throw it.

In general, all people are susceptible to have food poisoning. The most important thing is to contact your doctor whenever you show signs of food poisoning. He can help you and administer the right treatment. Be careful in handling, preparing and eating food.  After all, it is worth it taking precautions to avoid any illness that would affect your baby.
